So I have been away for a while but always crocheting, you cannot imagine the amount of WIP’s I have at this moment.
But I want to share one of the finished WIP´s that I have enjoyed so much in doing.
Baby Blankets using the one and only crochet stich – Double Crochet!
It is a gingham baby blanket, and I love working with this yarn for babies so much that some of the WIP´s for me I am actually using this yarn as well.
In order to do this I had the assistance of a YouTube video by Hooked by Robin Crochet a Gingham Blanket ANY Size with ANY Yarn! 😀🧶– this video explains everything so well, it was amazing to find!
This YouTube video also helps you with a very important decision before starting your blanket with the choice of the colors.
You must choose 3 colors, and these colors are explained as:
- accent color
- contrast color
- complimentary color
The main color is the complimentary color which must go with the other two colors and must be in between them (check the wheel color for this if you have difficulties), it is the most used color throughout the blanket and ties all the 3 colors together! The accent color is the strongest color, and the contrast color is supposed to make both the complimentary and accent color pop out, as I understood.

For this pink blanket we have:
- accent color – Dark Pink
- contrast color - White
- complimentary color – Light Pink

For this Blue blanket we have
- accent color – Dark Blue
- contrast color - White
- complimentary color – Light Blue

For this Blue and Green blanket, we have
- accent color -Light Green
- contrast color - White
- complimentary color – Light Blue
Having made this life-changing decision on the colors I started the Blanket!
Execution:
Now for this project I did a sample swatch to test out the yarn and the best hook to work with in the end I settled for the 5mm hook yarn.

Based on my Swatch sample I decided that my squares would be made of 14 stitches long by 9 rounds high.
Having decided the size of square I then followed on to decide the total measurement of the blanket.
I am not going to lie about this decision being made by trial and error and then decided that the blanket would be made 9 squares long by 7 squares high! This blanket is crochet on the long side being the initial chain must accommodate the 9 squares long.
So with the above decisions taken I started to make a chain of 126 chains in complimentary color (14 stitches for each of the square times the 9 squares equal 126 chins to begin this project).
Do go to the video to see how the blanket is executed being that it is all done with double crochet stich but in order to change colors every 14 stiches you must carry the color you are not using in between the stiches you are making – ( this is kind of difficult to explain in writing so do check out the video)!
Then you just go on with doing the blanket doing the color changes.
MAKING OF:

Details of the stiches in each of the Gingham Baby Crochet Blankets

When the blanket is finished, I did a shell stitch (*5 double crochet in one stich skip two stiches single crochet skips two stiches and 5 double crochets in the next stich* repeat until the end) I did this all around the blanket to give it a nicer finish.
As you can see, I enjoyed making them so much I made 3!

Project Checklist
· Yarn
- accent color – 1 yarn of 100gr Acrylic yarn
- contrast color - 1 yarn of 100gr Acrylic yarn
- complimentary color – 1 ½ yarns of 100gr Acrylic yarn –
· Hook: 5,0 mm
· Stitches
The only stitches you must know to start this project are:
o Slip Knot
o Chain
o Double Crochet
Mistakes as always have been made and because I believe that we can all learn from them here are my mistakes:
Always check that your squares have the 14 stiches, as I did frog quite a bit when for some reason, I somewhere dropped a stitch!
The crocheting and having to carry the color you are not using in between stitches can make your life difficult as both colors get tangled very easily!
The shell stitch on the side is a bit trickier as you do not have the stitches to guide you, but you must do this by visualizing where the stitch should go next.
These blankets are handmade and the sizes vary slightly because your stitches are loose or the yarn is different, but they are always amazing to do! However, the size is, ideal for a crib or a maxi Cosi car seat for a newborn.
For your guidance the size of each blanket in this post is as follows:
Blue and Dark Blue Blanket is 72,5cm by 57 cm
Pink and white Blanket is 78cm by 60 cm7
Blue and Green Blanket is – 76cm by 68cm
These are ideal in size for Baby stroller blankets / pram blankets / receiving blankets.
Inspirations:
As always, I must say I am not a designer and the inspiration came from Hooked by Robin and her wonderful YouTube video which is amazing
I never tire of thanking all who have helped turn my vision into reality by teaching the necessary steps to get there and inspiring me!
Please feel free to ask any questions you may have, not being an expert, my help will only go so far!
Hope you enjoy this project.
This project is also very special to me as I am going to sell these blankets on Etsy soon – will update the link when it is available feel free to buy one.
